“When you’re following your inner voice, doors tend to eventually open for you, even if they mostly slam at first.”― Kelly Cutrone

The secret is out, rejection is the secret sauce for successful entrepreneurs. Yes, they use rejections to achieve their business goals.

At USAToday.com, Gladys Edumunds, founder of Edmunds Travel Consultants in Pittsburgh, shares one of her reader’s frustration with the fear of rejection.

Good morning, Gladys, I am aware that being in business is all about getting customers. But I grow weary of rejection. Rejection has been a difficult thing for me to deal with in general. I realize that not every potential customer is going to buy. And then there are the irate customers that no matter what I do I can’t seem to satisfy. But how do I get beyond feeling bad when I have these days? I own a video production company and I call on businesses both large and small as well as public relation companies. — Thanks, Carl

This is the plight of many entrepreneurs.

However, rejections can be empowering, they can help you to grow  your business.

How, you ask?

Let’s look at an affirmation, “I use rejections as tools for learning and growing.” (from Entrepreneur: Overcome Your Fear of Rejection With Affirmations)

This single affirmation (repeated often enough) can retrain your brain to see rejection in a different light, and inspire you to break free from the stranglehold of the fear of rejection.

Rejections are woven into the fabric of life and business. You can’t avoid them, but how you perceive and accept them are the two things you control. Successful entrepreneurs are successful because they don’t allow things they have no control over to keep them from doing what needs to be done to grow their businesses.

“Incredible change happens in your life when you decide to take control of what you do have power over instead of craving control over what you don’t.” ― Steve Maraboli

Learn from those who’ve walked in your entrepreneurial shoes.

Here’s what a few successful entrepreneurs had to say about the fear of rejection. Hopefully, you’ll see the fear of rejection for what it is – just another hurdle you have to jump over to reach your destination.

Enjoy and be inspired!

1. Neil Patel, co-founder,  Crazy Egg, Hello Bar and KISSmetrics

The lesson every entrepreneur needs to learn is that rejection never goes away. It doesn’t matter if you are Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerber. You will get rejected.

The secret is to use the rejection to help motivate you to reach your business goals.

When you find yourself uptight with anxiety and stress because of what someone said, stop, listen and analyze what you heard before reacting; it’s not always an attack at you. You never know what is really going on in the lives and minds of others that make them lash out, so don’t take it personally.

3. Ramli John, software developer, speaker and start-up mentor.

If you want to be an entrepreneur, you have to get over the fear of rejection. You have to be willing to ask bold and unrealistic questions.

4. Stephen Key, inventor, author, speaker and co-founder of InventRight, LLC.

Always have a Plan B and a Plan C. If you do, you’ll feel less desperate, and as a result, less affected by rejection. If you have other options, you’ll be able to think more critically about why your idea failed this time. After all, as the saying goes, it’s not wise to put all your eggs in one basket. Accept that no project or idea is perfect so you can start thinking, where were the flaws? Where were its weaknesses? You need to embrace these realities — not ignore them. Analyzing your idea from different perspectives will help you understand rejection and how to combat it.

5.Liz Wendling, president, Insight Business Consultants.

Rejection is tough to deal with, but it simply is part of sales. Changing your thought processes and developing a new and different perspective are the keys to overcoming the fear of rejection.

As George* explains, “In caveman days, when deadly animals showed up, adrenaline flooded the body as a protection mechanism and was extremely useful when running from a bear or when you needed to fight, but not when you’re making sales calls or meeting new customers!” As soon as you identify the mental programming that lies at the core of your fear, you can begin to question it, challenge it and find experiences that contradict it.

Just as analyzing your losses in competitive environments will improve your playing ability, analyzing your business rejections will improve your performance as a salesperson and entrepreneur. Again, the key here is not to take things personally. It sounds clichéd, but a failure is not a failure if you can use it to make progress. Try to determine why you were rejected and what steps you can take to make your business more appealing. Don’t be afraid to ask the person who rejected you for the reasons behind their decision. This may seem a little humiliating at first, but in reality it demonstrates resolve and dedication to advancing your business at all costs.

Remember, business is a numbers game. Take your hits, learn from them, and keep moving forward.
