One of the most powerful tools we have to guide our life, that is often times overlooked, is our dream. Dream interpretation is not a New Age phenomenon. It‘s a life tool from Ancient Times. I’m going to share with you a brief overview of the different stages of your dream state that will help you to have a better understanding of your dreams.
There is a pattern to how we sleep. We go back and forth from deep sleep (NON-REM) to lighter sleep REM (rapid eye movement.) These two stages make up a cycle of your sleep. Each night, unless your sleep is interrupted, you will experience 4-6 cycles of REM and NON-REM. Each cycle lasts anywhere from 70-90 minutes.
Your dreams occur in the REM cycle of your sleep.
There are three stages of dreams that each one of us experience every time we sleep. These stages are:
- Wishful Thinking
- Precognitive
- Venting
Stage #1 – Wishful Thinking Stage (sorting and organizing)
This occurs approximately 90 minutes after you fall asleep. Your subconscious looks at what you experienced during the last 24 hours. It decides, based on your reality, what it’s going to keep and what it’s going to let go. Your subconscious mind remembers every little nuance of your day and goes through all of your experiences in the last 24 hours and decides what is or isn’t important. Think of the process you go through to clean your junk draw. For example: if you are an adrenaline addict, it will put your experiences with aggravation in the “feel good file.”
Stage #2 – Precognitive Stage (what is possible)
This stage happens in the middle of the night, or the middle of your sleepcycle. Your subconscious mind looks at what you’ve experienced not only in the last 24 hours but your history and predicts, with a dream, what could happen sometime in the future. This is the stage where people awaken with solutions to problems, innovative and life changing ideas. This is a very powerful tool, if you learn to identify and interpret what is happening and use it to guide your life.
Stage #3 – Venting Stage (release and let go)
You experience this stage, approximately two hours, before awakening. It’s the most misinterpreted stages of all three. Your Higher Self, with its infinite wisdom, helps you to release, let go, and eliminate issues that are toxic to your well being. UNFORTUNATELY, these are the dreams that are remembered and they are taken in literally and people will go through their day, even their life, worrying about something that their Higher Self wanted them to let go..
For example: you have a venting dream, just before awakening, that you took a gun and shot someone: your husband, friend or who ever. You awaken and you panic. You’re worried you’re going to hurt someone. This is not a dream where you should be worrying. This is a dream where you should be celebrating. This is a venting dream and it’s symbolic. This is your subconscious mind or Higher Self telling you to put an issue to rest. It was resolved while you slept.
If this dream occurred in the middle of your sleep, it’s cautioning you, based on the data it has, that you could create chaos in your life. It’s not saying it will happen, it’s telling you what could happen, if you don’t pay attention to your emotions and your decisions.
I hope this gives you some clarity on the subject of dreams. If you’ve had a recurring dreams, it means you don’t understand the important message your Higher Self is sharing. A message that’s so important, it keeps sending it to you over and over again.

The importance of dream cannot be overemphasized. The three stages of dreams that you analyzed is helpful and I will take note of it especially the precognitive part. The other two stages are equally important.
