Running a Bread and Breakfast for Dummies

“I knew that if I failed I wouldn’t regret that, but I knew the one thing I might regret is not trying.” – Jeff Bezos, Amazon CEO

Taking that leap from being an employee to becoming an entrepreneur can be fearful and challenging. What can budding entrepreneurs do to boost their confidence to make  this life shifting change?

Here are my six important steps

  1. Get in touch with what you’re good at and master it.
  2. Have clarity for who you’re at your core, your beliefs and your values.
  3. Have a crystal, clear vision  for your business and the customers/clients you want to serve.
  4. Embrace your fears, and take action in spite of them.
  5. Educate yourself, organize, prioritize and strategize.
  6. With  confidence and courage do all that is necessary to live your entrepreneurial dream.

She successfully made the leap.

Here is a a budding entrepreneur who made a successful leap from Corporate America to becoming a full time mom entrepreneur.

How to Prepare to Be An Entrepreneur

Her name is Mary White, Founder and CEO of BnBFinder, a top rated online directory for B&Bs and the author of the new book, Running a Bed & Breakfast For Dummies. Mary has an interesting story of leaving her job behind as a securities broker to start up her own company and combine that with her love of B&Bs.

The company has thrived since it first began 11 years ago and even managed to come on top even after 9/11 when tourism was hit the hardest.  Her new book provides hope and a realistic step-by-step guidance for anyone who has ever dreamed of pursuing their own dream of owning and operating a B&B.

The book has been well received by the Associated Press, USA Today, etc.  Mary has also been on several national and local radio and TV programs.

Mary’s 5 valuable tips for the budding entrepreneur.

Here are five valuable tips Mary shared for the budding entrepreneur who is preparing to take the leap from a job to entrepreneurship.

1.  Network with other entrepreneurs.

Their excitement and enthusiasm will motivate you.

2. Weigh the pros and cons.

Draw a line down the center of your paper and on one side write all the positive things about being an entrepreneur and on the other side write down the drawbacks. If you have more listed on the positive side, it’s time to seriously consider taking the plunge.

3. Find a need.

It’s exciting when you know you’re filling a void and also necessary to succeed. Even if it’s a lifelong dream, make sure there are like-minded customers. You can’t develop your business if there is no demand for it.

4. Develop a plan.

Entrepreneurs must live by the creed “failure to plan is planning to fail.” Your plan should be realistic with goals and a road map of how to plan to carry our your vision.

5. Be passionate.

Be prepared for long hours and a lot of personal sacrifice. You have to really love what you do.

More in sights

Mary and I touched on a few points that in essence are the same.  Here are 159 more tips to choose from to help you to jump start your entrepreneurial journey.

From my experience the pros of being an entrepreneur far out weigh the cons but this is coming from some one who raised four children by herself. Being a mom entrepreneur allowed me to live the vision I had for my family. To be actively involved in their lives not only at home but also at their schools.

I did not have a boss telling me I was taking too much time off by attending all of my children’s school activities – for me this was priceless. The hours I spent in and out of emergency rooms with my two asthmatic sons – if I was working for some one – they would have show me the door.  Being a mom entrepreneur was a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

It’s a wrap

You can do this – believe in yourself! Get out of your own way and take the plunge. I would love to hear from you and I will be happy to answer any questions you have about entrepreneurship.
