Goal setting is not just a hot topic at the beginning of the year. It’s a lifetime conversation.
Several thought leaders encourage us to talk about our goals for the purpose of accountability and achievement. Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby and MuckWork, disagrees. He shares his point of view at ted.com – he believes we are more likely to achieve our goals if we keep them to ourselves. Derek presents research stretching as far back as the 1920s to show why people who talk about their ambitions may be less likely to achieve them.
Reflecting on my past in relationship to goal setting and achieving, I accomplished most of my goals without sharing them with anyone. I wasn’t following anyone’s formula, I’m comfortable keeping my goals and accomplishments to myself. I’ve been told this is the attitude of an introvert.
What do you think, should we talk about our goals or keep them to ourselves?
Watch Derek’s video and share your thoughts.
It’s a wrap
I don’t carve anything in stone – some people will have success when they share their goals and others when they keep quiet. Know yourself and do what works for you.

Adalia, as usual, I think you’ve hit the mark! This time, the idea of keeping goals close rather than broadcasting them, feels so right. I too am an introvert, but have taught successful management and leadership development classes for years.
In those classes it always seemed popular to have people announce their goals; in fact, speaking them publically, seemed to serve as a verbal commitment. Who knows what happened beyond that class?!?!
But I’ve never been able to be so public myself – I often post goals in my office, but that’s just for me to see – visibility helps me a lot. When the video cited the study of people working longer on fleshing out their goals without announcing them, I could relate so well. Even after I accomplish the goal, I often don’t advertise it, but just keep on goin’.
It seems more of a confidence-builder that way – a real inside job!
I love your postings!
Hello Christine,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts … I think it’s important for people to understand what works or doesn’t work for them. I have more success when I don’t share my goals. However, some people have the same success when they share their goals. My advice to my readers – have awareness of self and do what you determine works best for you, in all areas your life.
